Paediatric chiropractic care is centred on the understanding that children are unique individuals who are in a developmental phase, not just ‘little adults’. A paediatric chiropractor is skilled in providing gentle care to children, with close attention to any clinical signs that would suggest a referral to other health professionals is required.
How Chiropractic Care Can Assist Infants and Children
Our chiropractors can treat a number of concerns experienced by babies and children. Some of the conditions we treat include:
Poor Posture
According to statistics, 73% of parents are concerned about their child’s posture, with the rise in phone and tablet use contributing to slouching and potential issues with the spine and neck.
At Mt. Eliza Family Chiropractic, we utilise a technology-based postural assessment system that detects even minor postural deviations, generates a report with your child’s individual postural images, and analyses the data to relate the distortions to spinal biomechanics. This enables us to develop a customised care plan and track your child’s progress and improvements over time.
Scoliosis
Scoliosis is most commonly observed in children aged 10 to 15, but it can also appear in younger children between the ages of 3 and 10 (juvenile scoliosis) and even in infants (infantile scoliosis). Its effects may include poor posture, shoulder humping, muscle weakness, and spinal pain, and it can be a more serious condition in children as it may quickly progress during growth spurts. A children’s chiropractor can manage scoliosis in several ways to help reduce pain and restore proper function.
Traumatic Birth Syndrome
Traumatic Birth Syndrome is a term used to describe the potential spinal damage that can result from the birth process in infants. This condition has been widely documented in medical research and may lead to a range of health problems. Our chiropractors are able to carry out a detailed orthopaedic and neurological assessment of your child to detect and manage any potential issues.
Plagiocephaly
Deformational Plagiocephaly is characterised by a flattened area on the back or one side of an infant’s head due to uneven pressure on the skull, which can lead to developmental delays.
Our chiropractors can give you advice and tips on your baby’s positioning during sleep or when laid down, as well as explaining the options available to you to manage the condition, including the implementation of a specifically designed TinyYears pillow designed and created by Dr Glenn Maginness.
Neurological Developmental Assessment
Neurological Developmental Screening Tests are used to determine which parts of a child’s brain are functioning at the expected level for his/her age and/or which parts of the child’s brain are not functioning at the expected level. The results will provide us with insight as to whether your child may benefit from treatment and if so what type of treatment would be best suited.
Our chiropractors have specialised training in paediatric neurological assessment and management, focusing on the integration of retained primitive reflexes and vestibular system support.
