The practice of paediatrics within the chiropractic profession is based on the principle that children are unique individuals undergoing the process of human development and not merely ‘little adults’. A paediatric chiropractor is a clinician capable of delivering gentle chiropractic care to a child, observing at all times the clinical parameters which would require that child to be referred to other health professionals where necessary.
How Does Chiropractic Care Benefit Infants and Children?
Our chiropractors offer treatment for a range of concerns faced by babies and children. Some of the conditions we help with include:
Poor Posture
Studies show that 73% of parents worry about their child’s posture, particularly as the increased use of phones and tablets contributes to slouching and possible spine and neck problems.
Mt. Eliza Family Chiropractic uses a technology-driven postural assessment system that identifies even the slightest postural deviations, produces a report featuring your child’s unique postural images, and analyses the data to link the postural distortions to specific spinal biomechanics. This assessment allows us to create a personalised care plan and monitor your child’s progress and improvements over time.
Scoliosis
Scoliosis is usually first seen in children between the ages of 10 and 15. However, it can occur in younger children aged 3 to 10 years (juvenile scoliosis) and in babies (infantile scoliosis). The effects of scoliosis can include poor posture, shoulder humping, muscle weakness as well as spinal pain and can be a more serious condition in children because it can rapidly progress as the child grows. Scoliosis can be managed by a children’s chiropractor in a variety of different ways to help alleviate pain and restore normal functionality.
Traumatic Birth Syndrome
Traumatic Birth Syndrome refers to the potential spinal damage that may occur in an infant as a result of the birth process. This condition is well-documented in medical research and can contribute to various health issues. Our chiropractors can conduct a comprehensive orthopaedic and neurological evaluation of your child to identify and address any possible concerns.
Plagiocephaly
Deformational Plagiocephaly refers to a condition marked by a flat area on the back or one side of an infant’s head, caused by uneven pressure on the skull, which may result in developmental delays.
Our chiropractors can give you advice and tips on your baby’s positioning during sleep or when laid down, as well as explaining the options available to you to manage the condition, including the implementation of a specifically designed TinyYears pillow designed and created by Dr Glenn Maginness.
Neurological Developmental Assessment
Neurological Developmental Screening Tests are designed to identify whether parts of a child’s brain are functioning at the expected level for their age and/or which areas may be underperforming. The results help us determine if your child may need treatment and, if so, the most suitable form of treatment.
Our chiropractors are qualified in paediatric neurological assessment and management, with expertise in integrating retained primitive reflexes and providing vestibular system support.
